Mindfulness: A Brief Overview
What is it?: Mindfulness is the human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. - mindful.org
Why should I be interested?: You can obtain a richer and more productive life. Over 35 years of scientific study has shown that personal mindfulness practice helps people lower stress, reduce depression, reduce pain, manage ADHD, overcome learning disabilities, sustain attention, increase productivity, increase working memory, and improve immune function all without drugs, supplements or cost.
How are the benefits achieved?: While mindfulness practices are varied and customized to personal needs and circumstances, a simple mindfulness practice follows.
Mindfulness in Three Easy Steps
Get comfortable either seated or lying down
Close your eyes, or gaze without focus
Focus on your in-breath and out-breath; or a gentle sound; or a sensation such as a breeze
The Practice: As your mind wanders to a thought, emotion, or different sensation, acknowledge it without judgment or analysis and return to Step 3. Doing this only a few minutes each day trains your mind to be present and open to better decisions.
Services: As a Certified Mindfulness Life Coach, I can integrate mindful attributes and narratives into Aspire treatment sessions. I also offer group and individual mindfulness workshops and training sessions.
